Professional Development for Massage Practitioners
Using Forearm and the Elbow to Save the Practitioner’s Hands
Darien Pritchard has thirty years of experience as a bodyworker, including twenty five as a massage trainer. For nearly twenty years he has run professional development training for qualified massage practitioners in UK and Australia.
Massage practitioners can find themselves stiffening up and creating strain in their own bodies as they work. Discomforts in the shoulders and lower back are common, and practitioners may also strain their wrist, thumbs and fingers. ‘Hands-Free’ massage uses a range of techniques that significantly reduce the amount of physical stress placed on these joints, but without compromising the massage treatment.
The forearm and elbows are strong tools to use in massage, which allow the application of firm pressure over a wide area, with ease. These tools, when used intelligently and sensitively, can save a practitioner’s hands, and expand the range of pressure that can be comfortably applied. This in turn can extend the practitioner’s working life.
